Why Ureteric Strictures Happen: Understanding the Main Causes in the Bihar Region

Ureteric stricture is a narrowing that obstructs the flow of urine, and it is frequently observed in regions like Bihar due to a high prevalence of kidney stones and related urological procedures. For effective and lasting treatment, understanding the root cause is absolutely vital. At Ashirvad (Dr Binod Healthcare), our specialists meticulously investigate these primary reasons before finalizing any treatment plan:

  1. Prior Kidney Stone Surgery Complications (Most Common): This is the leading cause we encounter. Procedures used to remove large stones, such as PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) or flexible ureteroscopy, can sometimes cause thermal injury or chronic irritation inside the ureter. This damage leads to the formation of restrictive scar tissue (stricture) months or years later.

  2. Untreated or Impacted Kidney Stones: A stone that gets severely lodged or remains stuck in the ureter for a prolonged period causes intense, localized inflammation. Even if the stone eventually passes or is removed, the chronic irritation leaves behind a band of tough scar tissue that narrows the pathway.

  3. External Trauma or Accidental Injury: Any significant blunt force trauma or impact to the abdomen or back can directly injure the ureteric wall, leading to fibrous healing and subsequent stricture formation. This needs careful assessment by a urology specialist.

  4. Major Abdominal or Pelvic Surgery: Non-urological operations, such as complicated gynecological or colorectal procedures, carry a small risk of inadvertently causing minor injury to the nearby ureter. This damage often goes unnoticed during the initial surgery but results in a progressive stricture later on.

  5. Congenital Narrowing (PUJ Obstruction): Some individuals are born with a naturally narrow segment in their urinary tract, most commonly at the junction where the kidney meets the ureter (Pelvi-Ureteric Junction - PUJ). This obstruction can cause intermittent swelling and symptoms that manifest later in adulthood.

The Ashirvad (Dr Binod Healthcare) Difference in Diagnosis:

Since the cause is often historical (linked to previous stones or surgery), our first step is comprehensive diagnostic imaging. Our specialists, having successfully managed numerous similar cases in the Bihar region, use advanced scans to precisely map the stricture's exact length, density, and origin before recommending the best course of action.
