Life with a Stent: What to Expect After Ureteric Stricture Surgery

If you’ve recently undergone Ureteric Stricture surgery at Ashirvad (Dr Binod Healthcare), you likely have a small, temporary tube called a ureteric stent placed inside you. This stent is a critical part of your recovery, acting as an internal splint. Knowing what to expect makes managing it easy and stress-free:
Understanding Your Stent's Role
The stent is a thin, flexible tube that runs from the kidney, past the surgical site (where the stricture was repaired), and into the bladder. Its primary job is to keep the reconstructed ureter open and allow urine to drain safely while the delicate tissue heals. This prevents pressure buildup on the new repair and protects the kidney.
What to Expect (Common Side Effects):
Bladder Irritation and Frequency: It's common to feel an increased, urgent need to urinate, or experience mild burning. This happens because the small coil of the stent rests in the bladder and acts as a minor irritant. These symptoms are usually manageable with medication prescribed by Dr. Deepa Verma.
Blood in Urine (Hematuria): It is normal to see blood, especially after periods of physical activity or exercise. The stent gently rubs against the lining of the bladder and ureter. Hydration is Key: Drinking plenty of water (at least 3 liters daily) helps dilute the urine and minimize this irritation.
Flank Pain During Urination: Some patients feel a mild ache or pressure in the kidney area when they urinate. This is called 'stent reflux,' where urine momentarily travels back up the stent due to bladder pressure. It is generally harmless but can be startling.
Managing Activity: While you should avoid heavy lifting, light walking and normal daily activities are encouraged. Excessive straining can cause the stent to shift or increase bleeding.
When is the Stent Removed?
The stent is typically left in place for 4 to 6 weeks, allowing the new repair to heal fully and regain its strength. Removal is a quick, often painless outpatient procedure performed by your specialist at Ashirvad (Dr Binod Healthcare), usually taking only a few minutes.
The stent is your safety net. Follow your surgeon’s advice, stay hydrated, and report any severe, persistent pain or high fever immediately. Our post-operative care team is here to guide your recovery.
